Joseph Leone was arrested and charged in the fatal shooting of his son of the same name on New Year’s Eve, in what is believed to be the last recorded homicide in NYC at 2021.
Leone, aged 57 admitted the crime and was charged with murder, assault and criminal possession of a weapon, the New York police said. He allegedly opened fire in front of his home on 1200 Bay Aspect toll road in Rosebank, Articulate Island, shortly before 7: 30 pm on 31 December, indicated a NYPD spokesperson.
The 29-year-old victim, who was named after his father, Joseph Leone, was shot in the chest. The young man had traveled from South Carolina over the holidays to try to help his father recover from a fall and a chronic drinking problem, his now-widow Kimberly Leone told the Daily News.
The police found the young Leone lying on the sidewalk unconscious about two blocks from Hylan Boulevard. He was later pronounced dead at the Staten Island University North Hospital, the New York Post reported.
