Jonathan Soto grew up between Puerto Rico and New York, in the Bronx, where he has promoted several community initiatives, including his work as part of the team of the federal representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Now, the Democrat will follow the path of his former boss, who challenged and won a Democrat who had maintained representation in his district in the Bronx. In his case, Soto seeks to represent the District 82, currently led by Michael Benedetto, in the Assembly of New York.
The lawyer of 36 years he is part of the progressive wave that has gradually gained positions in the Democratic Party throughout the city, including Queens and Brooklyn.
Soto’s electoral platform is led by education, since during the COVID-19, was a matter that he promoted by collaborating with Ocasio-Cortez, through Homework Helpers, a program that linked to volunteer tutors with hundreds of children who face some kind of interruption in their learning process.
“I am running to bring democracy home”, affirms Soto in his electoral platform launched last Wednesday along with a spot. “Our elected officials have taken democracy away from the people by working for special interests. Our calling is to build a fair economy, enact fair laws, and create responsive government for our communities.”
