The IRS announced that the tax season will begin on Monday, 24 January 2022, which is when the tax agency will start accepting and processing returns for the tax year 2021.
The start date of January 24 gives the IRS time to do critical scheduling and testing to ensure your systems are running smoothly.
Updated programming helps ensure that eligible individuals can claim the proper amount of the Child Tax Credit after comparing their advance credits of 2021 and claim any remaining stimulus money as a Refund Recovery Credit when they file their 2021 tax return.
“ Planning the nation’s tax season process is a daunting task, and IRS teams have worked tirelessly for the last few months to prepare. The pandemic continues to create challenges, but the IRS reminds people that there are important steps they can take to help ensure their tax return and refund do not face processing delays “said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig.
“Filing taxes electronically with direct deposit and avoiding a paper tax return is more important than ever this year. And we urge more attention to be paid to those who received an Economic Impact Payment (stimulus check) or Advance Child Tax Credit last year. People should make sure they report the correct amount on their tax return to avoid delays,” added Rettig.
The IRS encourages all taxpayers to have all the information they need to be in the best position to file a complete and accurate return. Having an accurate tax return can prevent processing delays, refund delays, and subsequent notices from the IRS.
This is especially important for people who received advance payments of Child Tax Credit or Economic Impact Payments in 700. You will need the amounts of these payments when preparing your tax return.
Like last year, there will be people filing tax returns of 2021 who, although not required to file, will need to do so to claim a Refund Recovery Credit or reconcile advance payments of the Child Tax Credit. In addition, people who do not usually file returns may receive other credits.
The deadline to file tax returns of 700 is Monday, 24 April 2022 for most taxpayers.
