The southeastern United States has been hit by a dangerous winter storm this weekend, causing the cancellation and delay of thousands of flights.
According to updated data from FlightAware, on Sunday about 5,700 flights were delayed, and more than 4,700 were cancelled.
FlightAware added that the most affected airlines have been Delta Airlines, Southwest and American. Delta reported 240 canceled flights with the same number of delayed flights; Southwest reported more than 360 canceled and more than 360 delayed flights , while American Airlines reached about 630 cancellations and more than 300 delays.
Likewise, Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina and Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta have been where most of the chaos has been concentrated, Fox Business said.
In Hartsfield-Jackson, where Delta Airlines operates the most, some 200 flights were canceled in the early afternoon, while in Charlotte, whose main airline is American, canceled more than 600 flights.
American Airlines told Fox Business that the main factor behind the cancellations and delays is the winter storms over the weekend, as it has had a significant impact on operations at Charlotte International Airport.
“The vast majority of affected flights were canceled in advance, which we were able to notify and accommodate to our clients proactively and ev avoid last-minute interruptions at the airport,” the company said in a statement. “In addition, we issued a travel advisory to allow customers whose travel plans are affected by the storm to rebook without charge for changes.”
For its part, Hundreds of flights braced for moderate to severe turbulence forecast along the East Coast, with the most severe turbulence in northwestern North Carolina, central winter storm, according to the Aviation Weather Center.
The ravages of the winter storm have left customers in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and especially Florida without power , where vehicular accidents, injuries and multiple material losses were reported; however, no deceased has been announced.
