An Ohio man stole a car while a teenage passenger was asleep in the backseat, leading police on a high-speed chase as the teen sent real-time location updates to police. authorities, police said.

Raylon Scott, of 19 years old, dozing in the backseat of an Audi A4 2012 at a Hyundai dealership in Findlay, when Justin Vaughn, aged 32, suddenly jumped into the driver’s seat and accelerated with Scott still inside.

Scott and his friend, Kharisma Guajardo, from 17 years old, had taken the Audi to the dealer to sell or exchange it.

Police were promptly notified that the vehicle had been stolen, but Guajardo was able to track the vehicle as it took off “at high speed” heading east on US 224.

Scott texted his friend real-time updates on his location” as well as messages about driving and threatening behaviors ”. The messages were forwarded to authorities, Findlay police said in a news release.

The police from the neighboring town of Tiffin tracked down and located Vaughn, who fled and led a car chase in Seneca County.

The chase ended when Vaughn crashed the Audi northwest of Sycamore. Both Vaughn and Scott suffered minor injuries from the crash, police said, and were treated at the scene by Sycamore EMS; a Seneca County Sheriff’s Office deputy also received a hand injury.

Vaughn was arrested after the accident and transferred to the Findlay Police Department.

He was booked into the Hancock County Jail on charges of kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and motor vehicle theft.
