The Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB) declared itself happy this Tuesday with the designation of Brasilia and Recife as venues for the basketball AmeriCup, a tournament that the country is organizing again after 38 years.

The new edition of the Copa América for men’s basketball teams will be played from 2 to September for twelve teams: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, United States, Virgin Islands, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Brazil hosted for the last time the contest in 1984, the year in which he won one of the four titles he has in his record.

“We are very happy to be able to bring the AmeriCup back to Brazil after more than three decades. The largest national team event in the Americas will also be the largest Olympic event in the country in 2022”, stated the president of the Confederation, Guy Peixoto.

“I ​​am sure of the success of the competition that will be organized by Brasilia and Recife and that the Brazilian team will go with everything in search of the title of the competition at home”, added the leader.

The The designation of Brasilia, the country’s capital, and Recife, a populous city in the northeast, was announced this Tuesday by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA).

Brazil was proclaimed the host of the competition last August, but FIBA ​​had not yet chosen the cities among the thirteen that presented their candidacies.

“We are very honored and encouraged to bring the AmeriCup back to Brazil after more than three decades. Both Brasilia and Recife have a lot to offer in terms of competition and cultural aspects”, said the executive director of FIBA ​​Americas, also Brazilian Carlos Alves.

According to the CBB, the matches in Brasilia will be played in the Nilson Nelson gymnasium while the Geraldo Magalhaes will house those from Recife.

The group stages of the competition will take place in both cities, but Recife will host the quarterfinals, semifinals and the final.

The pairings of the three groups of the first phase will be drawn in March.

The United States leads the record with 7 titles in 18 editions. Brazil follows with 4.

The AmeriCup will be the first major competition for Brazil since Gustavo de Conti took over as coach last September.
