The Director General of the WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, reported that new vaccine formulations are being developed and evaluated to see the impact against the new variant of covid, Omicron and other strains.
“I am concerned that, unless we change the current model, we will enter a second and even more destructive phase of vaccine inequity,” he pointed out through social networks.
Adhanom warned that the pandemic could be far from over and with the “incredible growth” of Ómicron, new variants are likely to emerge, which is why it considers that “monitoring and evaluation remain critical”.
The doctor did not rule out the possibility that vaccines are less effective in preventing infection and transmission of Ómicron than in the case of the previous variants.
However, he pointed out that the vaccines are still “exceptionally good” at preventing serious diseases is and even death.
“I am proud that COVAX delivered its billionth dose over the weekend. In times of Omicron, it is still more important than ever to vaccinate the unvaccinated”, he emphasized.
Finally he made a called on the population and governments around the world not to relax the health measures suggested by the World Health Organization.
“Make no mistake, Omicron is causing hospitalizations and deaths, and even the less serious cases are flooding the health facilities”, said the general director of the organization.
