The coach of Honduras, the Colombian Hernán Darío Gómez, said on Monday that he will not leave the bench and traveled with the squad to play the match of the eleventh day of the Concacaf qualifiers against the United States team.
“I don’t abandon ships like that”, said the former coach of Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Guatemala.
The trip of the Honduran team, bottom of the octagonal final of the Concacaf qualifiers, occurs one day after falling in San Pedro Sula by 0-2 against El Salvador.
Hours later, Gómez, in a brief statement, hinted that he could be leaving the national team due to the disappointing results since he took office: four defeats, three of them at home.
The Colombian coach said that it is normal for people to be impatient due to poor results and that this also affects the players and the components of the coaching staff.
“L People are very impatient, but the inheritance is not mine. That is a very hard moment, where people sometimes do not understand”, said the Colombian, who came to the position in substitution of the Uruguayan Fabián Coito, under whose direction the team had lost three games and tied three.
The Honduran team has only added three points in ten qualifying games, led by Canada with 22 out of 33 possible.
In second place are the United States and Mexico, for the moment with the last direct place with 18.
Panama, as the fourth classified team, is in the play-off zone with 17 integers. Costa Rica is fifth with 13, El Salvador sixth with 9 and Jamaica penultimate with 7.
The game against the United States will be played in Minnesota.
The Honduran players they traveled “sad” because of the poor performance they have had, according to their captain, Maynor Figueroa.
