The Hispanic coach of the Washington Commanders, Ron Rivera, gave his full support to the former Miami Dolphins coach, Brian Flores, who sued the NFL on Tuesday accusing “racial discrimination.”
Rivera gave his opinion on Flores in a video conference on the occasion of the presentation of the new name of the franchise that took place this Wednesday, February 2.
“I can see and feel the frustration. It’s almost like this is your last resort. How does a guy like that get out of the hiring cycle? “Rivera said about the case.
According to the coach’s comments, nothing more on the merits personal information of the former Miami coach deserves a new opportunity as a coach in the NFL, as he clarifies that “he is an accomplished coach.”
“If you put his resume, and take his name off and change the team he trained for and grew up with, and put it on the table and look at all the resumes, Brian Flores is the type of resume you are aiming for. Let’s judge on merit,” he said.
Rivera also commented that other black coaches such as Leslie Frazier and Eric Bieniemy should have their chance with a franchise.
He added that he believes that being Hispanic was what made him not be hired until his eighth interview with the Carolina Panthers in 2011.
Brian Flores filed his lawsuit because he believes the NFL has been racist in discriminating against him and other black coaches, denying them head coaching positions and other positions in the league.
Furthermore, it specified that in the 32 franchises there is no African-American owner and also pointed out that while the 70 % of the players in the league are black, the NFL and its owners reap thousands of dollars.
