A raid by US special forces in northwestern Syria this morning killed the main leader of the Islamic State group (ISIS), Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, President Joe Biden announced.
“Thanks to the skill and courage of our Armed Forces, we have removed Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, the leader of ISIS, from the battlefield,” Biden said in a statement. He added that all the Americans involved in the operation returned safe and sound and that he would provide more details to the country later today, reported Daily News.
Biden is scheduled to arrive in New York this morning, on a visit marked by the rise of gun violence in the city.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that there were “confirmed reports of deaths”, but did not provide numbers or identities, according to the EFE agency.
