These first weeks of the year have practically left various cities and towns in the United States under snow, and the bad news is that this winter storm will continue in the coming days.
In recent hours, the National Weather Service (NOAA, for its acronym in English) indicated that the winter storm in the following hours and during the weekend will wreak havoc in a strip of almost 3, 218 kilometers of US territory due to heavy snowfall, ice and sub-zero temperatures that will be recorded in different parts of the country.
NOAA issued storm watches and warnings winter on Tuesday, from southern Texas and New Mexico, to the midwestern states of Michigan and Illinois and eastern New York and Vermont.
New Mexico is bracing for the possibility of 35 inches of snow in some areas, and lower areas could record r temperatures that will oscillate between 20 and 25 degrees below zero with the factor sensation of wind chill.
Given this situation, the authorities have asked the population to get ready at home and have all the necessary supplies to be safe at home while the winter storm passes.
5 things you should not do during a winter storm
1) The most recommended thing is that during snowfall, the best thing will be stay at home. If it is necessary to go out, precautions must be taken. If you will be traveling by car, it is always important to check the tires before leaving the house; opt for main streets and not remote paths and prefer daytime trips.
2) You must wear clothing suitable to protect you from the cold. Wear several layers of loose, light and warm clothing. Several layers of light clothing will keep you warmer than a single thick layer. Wear gloves and a hat to help prevent loss of body heat. In case you have to go outside, cover your mouth and nose with a scarf and if your clothes get wet, change them immediately.
3) Do not block the heating ducts or the exhaust pipe. the fireplace, if you have one at home, when you use it. You may have moved some furniture and these outlets are closed and it is precisely in these moments of the winter season that it is important to maintain the circulation of heat inside the house. It can also help to leave cabinet doors open so warm air can circulate through pipes in kitchens and bathrooms.
4) Don’t let snow accumulate on the roof of your house because it may not support its weight, causing serious damage to your home.
5) Do not forget to insulate pipes, as well as walls, attics, doors and windows, not only to keep the heat in your home but also so that in the case of pipes to avoid that these leak or burst.
