The body of the missing Hispanic woman in California, Sara Celeste Otero, was found at the bottom of the cliffs in a restricted area of a major Navy base, police announced Wednesday.
The young woman of 28 years old, who had been missing for almost two weeks, was discovered after her car was seen abandoned at a rest stop on the side of a road near Camp Pendleton, an Oceanside police spokesperson confirmed to The New York Post.
“His body was found, a short time later, at the bottom off the cliffs in a restricted area,” said the spokesman for the Marine Corps base, about 45 miles to the north of San Diego.
It was confirmed that the body was that of Sara Celeste Otero, according to the spokesperson, and emphasized that “no crime is suspected.”
“He appears to have left his car and wandered into the restricted area,” added the spokesman, mentioning that the coroner has not yet ruled on the exact cause of death.
How Otero’s body was rescued
Celeste Otero’s body was rescued from the cliffs by helicopter, officials told KUSI reporter Hunter Sowards, who was the first to deliver the tragic news. It has not been disclosed whether the Marines were involved in the rescue operation.
The police had been looking for Otero since 28 in January, when she disappeared after telling her stepfather that she was going to the gym.
Her family admitted fears that she had harmed herself and told Fox News that she had a history of drug abuse, but that she had been sober for two years.
Her stepbrother, Ryan Bear, also said this week that Otero had a history of depression, but that things had “started to get better” after she met a new boyfriend.
