The main agency for immigration procedures modified its mission to return to the one that offers the welcome to immigrants, after the change made during the Donald Trump administration, where that welcome was conditioned to foreigners not being a public charge .
“USCIS upholds the promise of the United States as a nation of welcome and possibility with fairness, integrity, and respect for all we serve,” says the new mission of the Office of Citizenship and Immigration.
The director of the agency, Ur M. Jaddou, announced the new statement. The agency released the change, noting — without direct mention of former President Trump or former Director Ken Cuccinelli — that “former USCIS leadership invited employees to submit words that they felt best illustrated the agency’s work.”
The office where the procedures of any visa of stay, including the ‘green card’ and the naturalization process, reflects a new mission consistent with President Joe Biden’s strategy.
“The new mission statement is a reflection of this response from of the agency’s workforce, the priorities of the Biden Administration, and Director Jaddou’s vision of an inclusive and accessible agency,” the agency said.
Jaddou stressed the importance of modifying the mission of the agency, consistent with the services it offers and focused on family reunification.
“In essence, USCIS is It tries to deliver decisions to families, companies, workers, and those who seek refuge in our country on their applications, petitions, consultations and appeals”, he indicated. “This new mission statement reflects the inclusive nature of both our country and this agency.”
He added that the United States is and will continue to be a nation that welcomes people from all over the world, that seek family reunification, new job or career opportunities, and humanitarian protection.
“USCIS’s work makes America’s possibilities a reality for immigrants, the communities, and economies they serve. come together, and the nation in general”, considered the official. “USCIS will continue to serve the public with respect and fairness, and will lead with integrity to reflect America’s promise as a nation of welcome and possibility today and for generations to come.”
The agency faces delays in several processes that have forced it to implement adjustments, in order to avoid complications to immigrants, such as the expiration of the Employment Authorization document, whose validity was extended to two years for various groups of immigrants, such as asylees, refugees, victims of domestic violence and people with ‘parole’.
Cuccinelli promoted the “public charge” rule, which was canceled by the Biden Administration, but groups of Republicans filed a lawsuit to apply it. The former director of USCIS expressed that “welcome” immigrants are those who can “stand on their own”.
“Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own… will become a public charge,” Cuccinelli said in an interview on NPR in August 2019.

Anna Gallagher, executive director of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC), celebrated the new vision of USCIS, to consider that the agency represents “the gateways” for immigrants.
“This new mission statement reflects the dignity and humanity of those who seek to pass through those gates,” he said. “CLINIC applauds the leadership and vision of Director Jaddou, the first woman and daughter of immigrants to lead the agency. Under difficult circumstances, Director Jaddou is working to correct the course of the agency, with a focus on accessibility and human dignity.”
Gallagher asked Congress and the Biden Administration to allocate more funds to the immigration agency.
