Problems in the supply chain have caused a shortage of disposable cups used by customers in restaurants, one of which is Starbucks.

Certain Starbucks stores face a shortage of cups of paper. In the meantime, some customers may receive their drink in generic, unbranded cups. The Wall Street Journal reports that Starbucks locations across the country have consistently depleted their cup inventories and the situation is getting worse.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and are working quickly and closely with vendors in our supply chain to restock items as soon as possible,” a Starbucks spokesperson told Food & Wine.

Starbucks also plans to reuse the remaining holiday cups they have in stock that would normally be removed at this time of year.

The Daily Mail reports that Starbucks customers get a $0 discount.10 on a drink if they bring their own reusable cup. “The company’s goal is to reduce single-use cup waste by 50 percent for 2030”, said a spokesman.

The labor shortage in the national paper mills and weather-related resin production delays in Texas have contributed to a shortage of paper cups. The WSJ also points out that a shortage of workers is also hampering the production of plastic cups and lids.

In addition, the cups Disposables imported from China and elsewhere are stuck in ports. Shipping delays are preventing new ships from unloading their cup shipments.

Insider reported as early as last August that small, non-chain restaurants were having a hard time getting takeout containers because they were competing with chains bigger. Added to this is that when cups are available, the price is higher.

According to the Daily Mail, the shortage of Starbucks cups began in November 2021. CNBC reported in that month that what exacerbates the problem is that all of this is happening at a time when the pandemic has also increased demand for takeout containers, such as disposable cups.
