After the unfortunate death last Monday of five-year-old Mercedes Losoya, after receiving constant abuse and torture from her mother and her boyfriend, testimonies have now emerged from neighbors who said they had called several occasions to the San Antonio Police Department and Child Protective Services to report the violence they heard and saw.
Gabriel Granado, one of the neighbors of the apartment where the minor lived, recounted: “My first report was in November, after Thanksgiving, when we started hearing incidents. “We have been hearing banging, it sounds like a fist hitting the hand. For the last 2 weeks, I would say 50 blows like this”, he explained.
Granado and his fiancee Gabriela Iturbe are neighbors José Ángel Ruiz, boyfriend of Katrina Rose Mendoza, Mercedes’ mother. “I called the police several times,” says Iturbe. “The last time was on Saturday morning. I knew that this time something was a little different”.
The woman said that she had previously witnessed another incident of physical abuse by Mendoza with her daughter, when she kicked her in the parking lot of the apartment. “He physically kicked her to the side and of course we called (SAPD), and it was not the only time,” says Iturbe.
Despite the fact that the neighbors contacted the authorities several times after hearing and seeing the abuse of the minor, Mercedes was never removed from that home. Granado said that they did what they could to help her, but that he lost faith that the authorities would do anything about it.
The couple points out that the abuse has intensified in recent days, causing the last call to the police.
“They (SAPD) sent someone. But they (Ruiz and Mendoza) didn’t open the door, so they didn’t do anything,” says Iturbe.
According to the doctors, Mercedes’ body had multiple bruises and scratches. In addition, she was missing hair, she had lost teeth and toenails. She also showed signs of trauma and physical abuse on her body. Although so far the autopsy has not been revealed.
Both Katrina Rose Mendoza, the minor’s mother, and her partner, José Ángel Ruiz, are in custody in connection with the death of the minor. girl. Both blame each other as responsible for subjecting the girl to various types of child abuse.
The woman indicates that her partner put dog feces in the minor’s mouth, as well as a stocking with urine. He also points to him as the person responsible for pulling out two of his teeth and beating him with a belt and rings.
For his part, the accused assured that Mendoza and his other daughter, a 6-year-old girl, were responsible of the injuries suffered by Mercedes, detailed the police.
