ryan-garcia-recounted-the-hell-he-lived-in-depression:-“at-some-point-i-wanted-to-end-my-life”

Increasingly there are innumerable cases of depression in the world and athletes do not escape it. Many have lost their lives in that fight and others like Ryan García were able to overcome that dark stage to try to be reborn.

In January 2021 García overcame by knockout (eighteenth of his career) to Luke Campbell in the seventh round and everything looked promising for him. However, life gave him a more complicated test to overcome: depression.

He had to cancel the fights against Jorge “El Niño” Linares and Javier Fortuna after alleging mental health problems and dedicated to his complete healing.

“I hit rock bottom. I got into bad habits. I started drinking and I never drink, ever. I got drunk every day. At some point I wanted to end my life, I was mentally paralyzed (…) When I was in the depths of my depression, I did not believe that I would still be alive, ”he declared on the Dan Cannobio podcast.

Now, after overcoming his mental health problems, he announced that he is preparing to face Emmanuel Tagoe in the Alamodome of San Antonio. He wants to have a chance to fight for the lightweight belt again.

He left the Canelo Team

At 23 years old, Ryan Garcia was very serious about starting over. Through a statement he stated that from now on he will no longer work with the Canelo Team and thanked Eddy Reynoso for being in his corner since 2018.

He also revealed the name of his new trainer.

“I am excited to announce that I will now be working with Hall of Fame trainer Joe Goossen, as well as my father, Henry Garcia. Joe’s legendary career spans several decades working with championship fighters. I worked with Joe when I was a kid and the two of us have had a great relationship over the years,” he said in the statement.
