tequila-on-the-verge-of-defeating-vodka-as-the-best-selling-drink-in-the-united-states

Tequila is becoming increasingly popular in the United States and could soon overtake vodka. And it is that agave-based bottles, such as tequila and mezcal, were the fastest growing spirits category in 2022.

The Agave-based beverages recorded an increase in sales of 30.1% compared to the previous year, achieving sales of $5,200 million dollars, according to the Distilled Spirits Council of the US

It was also the second largest category by revenue behind vodka, which it has been the best-selling liquor in the US since the 1970 decade. With revenues of $7,300 million dollars.

Vodka continues to sell approximately $2,000 million dollars more per year than tequila and mezcal, but it is anticipated that agave-based spirits could surpass them in a few years.

Using volume as a measure, vodka continues to be the best seller. According to Distilled Spirits Council of the US, the liquor sold 78.1 million cases in 2021, more double the volume of the next category, which was pre-mixed cocktail drinks. Tequila and mezcal obtained fourth place with 26.8 million cases.

Around 98% of sales of $5,200 million dollars in agave-based beverages came from tequila, which is only made from the blue agave plant. Mezcal is a much broader label, applying to any liquor made from dozens of types of agave.
