ukraine-will-keep-its-airspace-open-despite-possible-russian-invasion

Ukraine reported this Sunday to keep its airspace open for international travel, despite repeated warnings issued by the United States that Russian troops may invade its territory at any time.

“ Ukraine’s airspace remains open and the state is working to prevent risks to airlines,” the Ministry of Infrastructure said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Faced with the increase in tension, the Dutch airline KLM announced the day before that it was suspending all its flights in Ukrainian airspace until further notice.

“The closure of airspace is a sovereign right of Ukraine and no decision has been taken in this regard, “added the ministry statement, after a meeting attended by officials from the presidency, airports and Ukrainian airlines.

The entity also detailed that most airlines continue to operate and 29 international airlines fly from 34 countries currently.

Fear of insurers

The Ukrainian government had to react after the Ukrainian airline SkyUp stated that a flight covering the route between Madeira and Kiev had to land in Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, because the Irish company that owned the plane announced the ban to fly over the airspace of Ukraine.

In a statement, he explained that on Saturday “the lessor (of the plane), resident in Ireland, informed the airline about the immediate ban on the entry of the UR-SQO aircraft into Ukrainian airspace.”

The low-cost airline also confirmed that “on 12 February 2022 the world’s largest insurance companies informed Ukrainian airlines that they would stop insuring aircraft for flights in Ukrainian airspace within 48 hours”.

“This decision is associated with greater risks of an outbreak of hostilities,” he said in a second statement.

This measure implies that the lessors require that the planes must return to the European Union (EU) as soon as possible, he said. 2022
