A history of Portugal would be in trouble. According to various media outlets in the European nation, former referee Bruno Paixao is being investigated for allegedly having received 1.9 million euros from Benfica.
The reviews indicate that Benfica would have deposited the aforementioned amount to Paixao for receive “favorable arbitrations” and “manipulate sports reality”.
Media such as CMTV, Record and O Joto also assured that for the time being the investigations are based on emails and job titles of those companies that collaborated with Benfica himself in the alleged fixes.
To date, the companies or sponsors that would have participated in the the series of bribes.
If found guilty, the club would face serious sporting, financial and criminal consequences. The most serious, in the administrative field, would lead to administrative relegation to the second division.
Other direct sanctions would reach the CEO of the Benfica Group, Domingo Soares Oliveira, or Luis Filipe Vieira, current president of Benfica.
At the moment, the Judicial Police is gathering information for the investigation, but the outcome is beginning to come after the Bruno Paixao admitted having received money from businessman José Bernardes to presumably execute “a quality control service.
