scientists-do-not-rule-out-that-the-next-variant-of-covid-is-more-contagious-than-omicron

In some countries, including the United States, the decision was made a few days ago to relax some measures against Covid, including stopping wearing masks indoors, which is not entirely well seen by some members of the the scientific community who believe that the end of the pandemic is still far away.

In fact, experts on the subject warn that contrary to what many believe, Omicron is not necessarily the last great wave of coronavirus , since it is likely that a new variant will appear that can be much more contagious.

This is stated by Professor Mark Woolhouse, from the University of Edinburgh, who in an interview for a television channel in India explained that Omicron does not come from the Delta variant, but from a completely different part of the virus family tree. And since we do not know from which part of the family tree of the virus the next variant will come, we do not know the pathology that it may have. It could have minor symptoms, but it could also be greater.

“People seem to think that there has been a linear evolution of the virus, from Alpha to Beta to Delta to Omicron. But it’s not like that. The idea that the variants of the virus will continue to be milder is wrong,” added Woolhouse.
