Attacks on women in Bolivia

Bolivia has been in force since 2021 a law that seeks to protect women from all types of violence that, among other aspects, punishes femicide with 30 years in prison without the right to pardon.

However, the law has not curbed the levels of sexist violence and, for example, the main crime reported in 2021 was that of “family or domestic violence”, with 37.613 cases, according to data from the Bolivian Prosecutor’s Office.

Feminist organizations have claimed for years that the law is not fully complied with due to shortcomings such as the lack of budgets and adequate personnel to deal with these cases.

The angry protest The recent acts of the activists after learning through a notorious case that many sentenced femicides have been released left the Bolivian Justice in the crosshairs and motivated the Government to create a new commission to review these cases.
