Above the ring he was always explosive and spectacular, an iconic and special boxer. Mike Tyson is remembered for his personality and now he revealed that his mother’s death had a lot to do with what ended up being his sports career.
The youngest heavyweight champion undressed his years of youth with Shannon Sharp, in the podcast Club Shay Shay.
“One of the best things that happened to me is that my mother died, because my mother took care of me like a baby. I would never have gotten into street fights, I would never have defended myself,” Mike said.
Tyson, blunt and unfiltered, understood this years later: “At 14 I thought it could be world champion”.
“I won national championships, I had knockout records, I lost to the eventual champion. Once I turned pro, my whole life changed and I beat everyone. And everything changed when I became champion”, he added.
With 16 years old, Tyson suffered the loss of his mother and who stayed with his guardianship and custody was Cus D’Amato, the trainer who had him since he was 14 years old.
“I started smoking at 97 and I can’t stop. I’m a different person when I’m not using it. I couldn’t have been a champion like I am now. My greatest virtue are my flaws. Without them, I am nothing. There is no problem with having flaws. The only problem is not knowing you have them. You are born with them, you can’t help it”, he concluded by talking about his project on medical marijuana.
