Anthony Gámez, a resident of the state of Maryland, was arrested with a loaded weapon in front of a police precinct in Queens (NYC) over the weekend, authorities said.
The visitor from 30 years old I was in front of the Precinct Police Station 114 on Astoria Boulevard near the street 35, around 11: 30 am Sunday, when an officer noticed a lump on his pocket, the NYPD said.
The suspect was later arrested and found in possession of a loaded Springfield firearm. Gámez, a resident of Beltsville, a suburb of Washington DC, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm and a large-capacity ammunition magazine, reported New York Post.
New York suffers currently a rise in violence that many associate with the illegal trafficking of weapons from other states. One of the latest measures announced is the review of backpacks for passengers at the Port Authority bus terminal, the largest in the city.
In his recent visit to NYC, President Joe Biden supported the plan by Mayor Eric Adams to curb crime and gun violence. He also unveiled a national initiative to stop illegal gun trafficking and warned that “if someone commits a crime with a phantom gun, not only will state and local prosecutors go after them, they will also expect federal charges and federal prosecution.”
