After hitting the judge’s chair in the doubles match he lost with his racket, the German Alexander Zverev, second seeded, was expelled from the Mexican Open in Acapulco. This was reported by EFE.
“Due to unsportsmanlike conduct at the conclusion of his doubles match on Tuesday night, Alexander Zverev was suspended from the tournament in Acapulco,” the organization announced in a statement.
The German, who lost together with the Brazilian Marcelo Melo in the first round of the doubles tournament against the British Lloyd Glasspool and the Finn Harri Heliovaara (6-2, 4-6 and 10-6), hit the structure where the chair umpire of the match was located at least three times. In one of them, in fact, he almost hit one of his feet.
In this sense, the German acknowledged that he was wrong and apologized: “It is difficult to put into words how sorry I am for my behavior during and after the doubles match. I have apologized privately to the chair umpire, because my attitude towards him was wrong and unacceptable. I’m disappointed”.
Thus, Zverev will not be able to play in the second round of the individual tournament against his compatriot Peter Gojowczyk, who qualified directly for the quarterfinals. The second seed had beaten the American Jenson Brooksby in the first round, in the match that ended later in history (4: 54 of the dawn).
It was a situation that should not have happened, and there is no excuse. I also want to apologize to the fans, the tournament and the sport I love so much.
