Some young players would have asked the Players Association (MLBPA) to try to reach a quick agreement with the MLB to avoid what seems to be a serious possibility that there will be a delay in the start of the baseball season in Major Leagues, due to work stoppage.
In this information that was reviewed by the EFE news agency, a source close to the players revealed that the main reason for this request would be to prevent their salaries from the 2022 are reduced as happened in 2020 due to the Covid pandemic.
“The young players have been pressuring the Union to reach a solution and allow them to return to the game, since for many it is not convenient for this situation to spread”, explained the source, who asked keep your name anonymous, due to the confidentiality of the matter.
Another reason that has players concerned about a possible reduction in the campaign is that the waiting time to enter free agency or years of arbitration would be affected.
MLBPA and MLB have made little progress in their latest meetings
During the current week, MLB representatives MLB and MLBPA have met more frequently and longer but they are making significant progress that will allow reaching an agreement to end the lockout that began on December 2, 2021.
On the meeting held on Wednesday, it was learned that the league proposed a minimum salary of $640, 000 dollars for the harvest of 2022, in addition to the condition of increasing $10,000 dollars during the next four years, however, players have requested a minimum of $775,000 dollars with increases of $30,000 by year.
Last week, the MLB announced that the start of Spring Training was going to be delayed due to the lack of an agreement, however, a few hours later the MLBPA issued a statement denying said information, which once again demonstrated that the understanding between both parties is further and further away.
On the other hand, the commissioner of Major League Baseball, Rob Manfred, had given the deadline to reach an agreement, the 28 of February, otherwise this would lead to a delay in the start of the season, the reduction of the season and a proration in the salaries of the players.
So far, everything seems to indicate that it will be impossible to have an agreement for the last day of this month, so a delay in the start of the campaign seems imminent.
