Cancellations of major sporting events in Russia continue to be added due to the military attacks ordered by President Vladimir Putin on Ukraine. On this occasion, Formula 1 issued a statement confirming the momentary cancellation of the Sochi Grand Prix, Russia for the upcoming season, which is scheduled to take place in September of this year.

“The World Cup Formula 1 visits countries around the world with the positive vision of uniting people and nations. We are observing the development of the events in Ukraine with sadness, great impression and we hope for a change and a peaceful resolution of the current situation”, the directors of Formula 1 have indicated in their announcement.

The Formula 1 has made it clear that, while the problems between the two nations on Ukrainian soil are not resolved, neither their drivers nor their teams should visit Russian soil during this season to carry out the event.

“On Thursday afternoon Formula 1, the FIA ​​and the teams spoke about the position of our sport and the conclusion is that, counting on the vision of our most important shareholders, it is impossible to celebrate the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances”, the statement concluded.

Before the Formula 1 high command made the decision this Thursday, some drivers had already shown their willingness not to play the tournament on Russian soil . One of them was the current world champion Max Verstappen, while the other was Sebastian Vettel.
