WASHINGTON – The Government of Ukraine has asked the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for emergency financial aid, the managing director of the institution, Kristalina Georgieva, revealed this Friday in a statement.

Georgieva explained that the Fund has held meetings remotely from Washington with the Government of Ukraine, with the aim of giving it greater financial support in the face of the economic consequences that the Russian invasion is already having.

Specifically , the Ukrainian Executive has asked the IMF for emergency financial assistance, and the possibility of granting such support through the $2 loan program is also being explored,200 millions of dollars that Ukraine already has with the agency.

After months of tensions, Russia this week launched a military operation in Ukraine that began with bombardments in several urban centers and continued with the deployment of troops, so that this Friday Russian military units are tightening the encirclement of the country’s capital, Kiev.

The fighting has already cost the lives of 137 Ukrainians and 200 have been injured, according to the Government of Ukraine; and, in addition, thousands of people have had to flee to the west of Ukraine or to the neighboring countries of Moldova, Poland, Romania and Slovakia.

For the time being, a set of economic sanctions against Vladimir Putin and the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, by the United States, an announcement made official by the White House press secretary, Jen Psaki.

It was learned that both officials they will be prohibited from making financial transactions to any US citizen and will be prohibited from setting foot in the United States; however, they may be at the United Nations headquarters, which is located in New York.
