Burger King not only removed the Whopper from the discount menu and it is no longer available in the two for six or two for five promotions. The fast food chain is also reducing the number of chicken nuggets in each order.
Burger King restaurants operated by Carrols Restaurant Group remove two nuggets from each order, instead of containing ten nuggets, now it offers eight pieces.
The changes implemented at Burger King would be a consequence of inflation, price increases throughout the supply chain and the increase in labor costs themselves.
Reducing the number of nuggets in meals has less impact on customers since the price per order is being maintained, although the reality is that the product per unit has become more expensive.
The adjustment in the order of nuggets is part of a series of changes that includes Carrols for Burger King, some have already been implemented and others will be implemented in the rest of the year.
“The Burger King brand has about a dozen promotional initiatives and menu…” Carrols CEO Daniel Accordino said, Marketwatch reports.
Carrols is the largest franchisor of Burger King in the United States and operates 1028 Burger King restaurants in 23 states.
“The national food and paper producers and distributors that supply the majority of of our products are dealing with labor restrictions, along with higher fuel costs and are passing the increases on to us,” Accordino said.
Carrols revealed the inflation that Burger King faces with beef, which constitutes a quarter of its food basket, which is 33% more than the last year.
“General inflation of raw materials was approximately 14% last quarter compared to with the period of the previous year, Accordino said.
Accordino also offered details of labor inflation faced by the company. Increased average hourly wages by 14% per year while trying to maintain a 6 am to business hours pm as it raced to hire and retain workers.
In addition to Burger King, other fast food chains are also adjusting their product prices due to inflation. Little Caesars raised the price of its Hot-N-Ready pizzas for the first time.
Domino’s, like Burger King, adjusted parts in orders to maintain the same price; removed two chicken wings from their $7 takeout offer.99. Chipotle raised prices, as did Starbucks and McDonald’s.
