Following in the footsteps of Britney Spears, Amanda Bynes seeks to end the guardianship that, nine years ago, gave her parents, Lynn and Rick Bynes, legal control over her affairs.
Last Wednesday, the actress signed a petition in the Superior Court of Ventura, California, to end the custody imposed by a judge in the 2013. Given this request, a hearing was scheduled to take place next March 22.
“Amanda wishes to end her guardianship ”, Bynes’ attorney, David A. Esquibias, told People magazine on Friday. “She believes that her condition has improved and the protection of the court is no longer necessary,” added the lawyer.
Prior to this, in September, a report on Bynes’s state of health was presented, which was approved by a California court and whose next update is scheduled for January of 2023. Contrary to what was reported at the time, Esquibias explained that his guardianship “had not been extended” until 2023.
“Recently, a report on your health and welfare status that was approved by the court. Under the law, the next status report must be submitted within two years. Her guardianship will end when it is no longer convenient for Amanda”, explained the attorney for the actress, who is now 35 years old.
Bynes was placed under the guardianship of her parents in August 2013, after a wave of erratic behavior and multiple arrests while battling her addictions. In 2018, the actress told Paper magazine that she had been sober for four years and thanked her parents for helping her “get back on track.”
Unlike Spears, Bynes’s parents agree to the termination of custody of their daughter. “Lynn Bynes absolutely supports Amanda’s request to end her conservatorship and is very proud of her and the hard work she has put in to get her here,” said Tamara Arminak, attorney at Lynn and Rick Bynes.
