un-security-council-convenes-special-emergency-session-of-the-general-assembly-before-the-invasion-of-ukraine

The UN Security Council approved this Sunday a resolution to convene a special emergency session in the General Assembly after the invasion of Ukraine authorized by Russian President Vladimir Putin since last Thursday.

The initiative taken by the organization made up of the 193 member states was through the United States and Albania, which was approved with 11 votes in favor, one against, which was Russia, and three abstentions by China, the United Arab Emirates and India.

Despite Russia’s vote against, the election of the leading nation in the conflict is invalid due to a veto imposed by the organization.

The decision that weighs on Russia was approved after this nation blocked a resolution that condemned its invasion and ordered the withdrawal of troops, while searching for that the Assembly approve a document similar to the one recently obstructed C.

The special session is expected to start on Monday, but the vote on the text will not take place before Wednesday, to give the delegations time to analyze it with their capitals, various sources told EFE .

Likewise, the United States and Albania used a formula that allows the Security Council to refer a question of peace and security to that body in the event of a blockade by a permanent member, an alternative that has not been used successfully in four decades.

This type of emergency session has been very rare in the history of the General Assembly , since its resolutions do not have the same weight as those determined in the Security Council, whose objective is to manage conflicts.

In this way, the United States and its allies try to achieve the greatest number of countries that support its resolutions so that Russia’s isolation can become more and more evident.

During the presentation of the vet resolution sponsored by Russia in the Security Council, more than 80 co-sponsors of the initiative met, this being an indication that the resolution will go ahead in the next Assembly .

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Ambassador of the United States at the UN, pointed out that the resolution will serve to make Russia end up “accountable” and sent a message to the Russian military in which he affirmed that “the world is watching them” and will hold them accountable.

In addition, he defended the need to take extraordinary measures to face the threat and do everything possible to help Ukraine and its citizens.

“Let us have the courage to than the Ukrainians who stand up bravely to defend their democracy and their way of life and their futures. Let’s show them that they are not alone”, emphasized Thomas-Greenfield.

For the moment, Moscow has remained on the offensive during the fourth day of the invasion of its neighboring country, while the Ukrainian forces resist the attacks.
