4-year-old boy fatally shot outside a Georgia Publix supermarket while his mother was shopping

A 4-year-old boy was fatally shot in a car outside a Publix grocery store in Georgia while his mother was shopping inside the store, police and relatives of the victim released Monday.

Little Miyell Hernández took from a firearm that was inside his mother’s car and “accidentally shot himself”, in an event recorded around 5: 00 pm last Sunday, in the parking lot of a Publix in the county of DeKalb, the police said in a statement.

Another relative of 13 years old and a baby were with Miyell in the vehicle at the time the firearm was detonated and later died, authorities said.

The mortally wounded boy was rushed to a hospital, but was later pronounced dead; no charges have been filed as of this Monday afternoon, due to the child’s death.

“Our hearts and thoughts go out to the Hernandez family,” said DeKalb County Police Chief Mirtha Ramos. “We are imploring gun owners to always keep their guns safe and secure.”

After the shooting, the teen in the car immediately ran to the grocery store for help authorities said. The children had stayed in the car while Miyell’s mother went shopping.

The weapon was not secured inside the car from his mother, police told Fox 5 Atlanta, and at this time, it is unknown who the gun belonged to or if it was legally registered.

An online fundraiser set up to help offset Miyell’s funeral costs dwarfed $1,900 dollars at noon on Monday.

“Keep us in his prayer,” the website says. “We are asking for love and support to fund a tragic time for our family… Thank you for your love and support.”

Miyell is the sixth child to be shot to death in metro Atlanta this year, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Days earlier, 9-year-old Kemoni Mack died after being shot at an apartment complex in southeast Atlanta, where a suspect was charged with 13 years old, according to the police.
