airbnb-to-offer-free-accommodation-to-100,000-ukrainian-refugees

Airbnb said Monday that it will offer free temporary accommodation for up to 100,000 refugees who have fled from Ukraine.

The rental company will finance these stays with the help of Airbnb hosts and donations from the Airbnb.org refugee fund, according to a press release.

It should be noted that more than 500,000 Ukrainians have fled since the start of war. Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations said on Monday that Kiev still awaits a diplomatic resolution with Russia, even as Moscow sends more troops and weapons to its border.

“We need help to achieve this goal. The biggest need we have is for more people to offer their homes in nearby countries, including Poland, Germany, Hungary and Romania,” said Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky.

The initiative is part of Airbnb’s efforts to support refugees through the company’s non-profit organization: Airbnb.org.

In total, in the last five years, Airbnb and Airbnb.org have provided temporary housing to 54,000 refugees and people who have been granted asylum, which come from many countries, including Syria, Venezuela and Afghanistan.

Airbnb has not specified how much money it plans spend to help refugees from Ukraine or how long the refugees will be housed. In the coming days, more information will be provided on how the hosts of the houses offered on their platform can support this initiative.
