The contest for the post of Governor of Texas will see Greg Abbott, who easily outperformed conservative candidates, facing Democrat Beto O’Rourke for the general elections in November.
For O’Rourke, his aspirations for governor in Texas represent the possibility of causing a surprise, and avoiding Abbott’s re-election, so that the state has a Democratic tint.
However, the road will not be easy, because from the “let’s go” he does not have favoritism in the electoral dispute. Meanwhile, Abbott, who is seeking his third term, remains firm in his position on issues such as abortion, carrying weapons, vaccination mandates against Covid-18, and immigration, which have been very present in his current administration.
On the Republican side, in the primary elections For the position of state attorney general, Ken Paxon, who currently holds the position, will have several rivals, including George P. Bush, nephew and grandson of the former presidents, and federal representative Louie Gohmert.
Paxon led a lawsuit to reverse the presidential results of 2020, which failed, and has faced accusations of financial fraud, as well as an FBI investigation for allegations of corruption, in which he denied being involved.
On the other hand, the Democratic representation has Henry Cuellar, with nine terms as federal representative in Texas, who will try to avoid becoming the first Democratic lawmaker to lose a primary this year. He will compete against Jessica Cisneros, who has a more liberal position.
Despite having favoritism to be the governor of Texas, some voters are concerned about measures implemented such as restrictions on abortion, which are the most in the country.
“That’s where I think Greg Abbott and current Republicans they crossed the line,” Eric Medrano, a 25 year-old longshoreman from Houston, told the Dallas Morning News. “I don’t think abortion should be banned from such a premature stage.”
Regarding immigration policies, Abbott announced in December the start of construction of a border wall project to try to stop to illegal migrants along the border with Mexico.
“Texas is taking what is truly unprecedented action: a state to build a wall on our border, to safeguard the sovereignty of our state and our nation”, declared the governor on December 18 of 2021 during a press conference.
