President Joe Biden called on Congress during the State of the Union address to approve “once and for all” immigration reform, to pave the way to citizenship for millions of undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States.
“Immigration reform is something that everyone supports, from unions to religious leaders, including the US Chamber of Commerce. Let’s approve it once and for all, “said the president.
Similarly, Biden stressed that he has managed to get countries in Central and South America to agree to receive more refugees and maintain their borders more secure.
He also assured that the reform should provide a path to citizenship for the “Dreamers”, who arrived on US soil as children, and the beneficiaries of Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
Among the beneficiaries, agricultural workers and employees who have been considered essential during the Covid pandemic would also stand out-11 .
“It is not only the right thing to do, but it is also economically smart,” said Biden, who emphasized that families should not wait decades to meet again.
“We can keep burning the torch of freedom that brought generations of immigrants to this country; to my ancestors and to many of you”, the president pointed out to the legislators.
During On his first day as president, President Biden asked Congress to approve immigration reform with the goal of obtaining citizenship for nearly 11 million undocumented immigrants that are in the country.
However, the road has been longer and slower than expected, since not even the smallest versions of the bill have made progress in the Senate and the Lower House, where the majority of Democrats is minimal.
This situation has caused frustration among the Hispanic population in the United States, who lament that immigration reform has lost relevance despite the initial promises of the White House.
