A young Dominican of 18 years old has suffered harassment and ridicule from other people for years since they began to disproportionately believe his breasts.
Although the family sought medical help, due to low resources, they have not been able to afford the treatment for Juan Francisco Pimentel.
Since he was a child, the Dominican’s breasts began to grow excessively.
“I said, ‘but this is not normal’, this development in his chest so fast and so big”, declared his mother Carmen Luisa Heredia to Z5.
When going to the Dr. Robert Raid Cabral Children’s Hospital, medical personnel told the mother that the boy he would need surgery to remove the excess tissue.
“There the pediatrician told me, ‘from what I see, he is going to have to be operated on,’ because he has too much chest,” the parent recounted.
The situation led to former schoolmates in San Gregorio de Nigua in the pro Vincia de San Cristóbal rejected and harassed him.
Heredia said that even teachers called her to let her know what was happening.
“The other boys told me, ‘ah, look, that one has big breasts’. I felt very bad when I went out to recess”, narrated the young man.
“Boys making fun of you in class, everywhere…so, you felt bad”, insisted the boy.
“I didn’t pay attention to him; because if you listen to him, then he has to fight. So, they kick him out of school, they have to call his father, his mother”, continued Juan Francisco.
“There are many people, small and large, who are always relaxing him because of the nipples ”, said, for his part, Father Juan Pimentel.
The family requested citizen help to be able to pay for the Dominican’s treatment, since, at the moment, both parents are unemployed.
Juan Francisco suffers from a condition known as gynecomastia, or an increase in the amount of mammary gland tissue in boys or men. The abnormality is caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. The Mayo Clinic website states that gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly.
In some cases, gynecomastia can go away on its own. But, if it persists, as is the case with Juan Francisco, it should be treated with medication or surgery.
