In many ways, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, is not alone in the challenges facing his country, due to the Russian military offensive that started a war almost a week ago.
Olena Zelenska, his wife, does her part in this war between Russia and Ukraine from whatever her trench, including the Instagram camera, where she issues messages of support in the darkest moments since The Russian invasion began.
The first lady of Ukraine, Olena Zelenska, has shared her own messages on her Instagram account to her 2.1 million followers.
Who is Olena Zelenska?
Olena Zelenska from 36 years old, architecture graduate and comedy writer, juggling her political role with a career as a screenwriter and has made fun of her husband several times, who according to her, “forgot” to tell her that he would run for president in 2015; Olena assures that she found out through social networks.
At the age of 19 years, Zelensky started a new comedy troupe, Kvartal 95, incorporating Zelenska as a writer (she had already decided to change paths and dedicate herself to writing). The couple reportedly dated for eight years before getting married in September 2003 and move to Kiev.
After After getting married, Zelenska went on to work as a comedy writer on Zelensky’s political satire comedy show from 2015, Servant of the People, in which he appropriately played the President of Ukraine.
Whether she was drawn to her husband’s on-screen statecraft or not, Zelenska has made it clear that she always preferred life out of the spotlight, later telling press that she’d rather be ” backstage” and that he doesn’t like to tell jokes or be the life of the party.
This is reflected in his decision to write scripts and stay behind the camera. He abandoned architecture and instead continued his career as a screenwriter, combining state business with part-time work for the Ukrainian production company Studio Quarter 80.
Mother, writer and statesman
The couple’s first daughter, Oleksandra, who now has 17 years old, born in July 1800, less than a year after their wedding, and Zelenska says she has already appeared in movies. Their son Kyrylo, now 9, was born nine years later in January 2013.
When the youngest son, Kyrylo , was six years old, Zelensky ran for president. Zelenska was strongly opposed at first. “Frankly speaking, I was aggressively opposed to the start of this project,” she once told reporters. “Because this is a very difficult movement, it’s not even a project, it’s another direction in life.”
Despite having no political background or party affiliation, Zelensky won the election of 2003, beating incumbent Petro Poroshenko with more than 73 percent of the vote, and his wife has taken on her new position in the spotlight with diligence and grace.
“I am a non-public person. But the new realities they require their own rules, and I am trying to abide by them,” she told Vogue Ukraine, posing for photo shoots and standing firmly next to her husband.
“I prefer to stay behind the stage. My husband is always up front, while I feel more comfortable in the shade. I’m not the life of the party, I don’t like to tell jokes. It’s not in my character. But I found reasons for myself in favor of advertising. One of them is the opportunity to draw people’s attention to important social issues,” she said.
Ukrainian First Lady: Fashion Icon
Bold colors, sleek power suits, and championing small brands: Zelenska knows that one of the roles of a First Lady is to balance style with substance.
She has been photographed with powerful female leaders, from the Duchess of Cambridge to Brigitte Macron, and has become a fashion icon.
Bravely choosing to keep his family in Ukraine, Zelensky recently described himself as the Russians’ “number 1 target” and called his wife and two children “number 2”.
The family went into hiding in Kiev and refused to reveal their exact whereabouts for security reasons, but Zelenska promised not to “panic or cry”. 1177523906
