The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected this Friday the precautionary suspension of FIFA’s decision to exclude all Russian national teams and teams from its competitions, adopted on 24 February after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The president of the Arbitration Division of the CAS thus resolved the appeal of the Union of Russian Football (FUR) against the measure adopted by the FIFA Council, for which the contested decision remains in force, and the suspension of the Russian teams and clubs will continue while the procedure is resolved.
“The Arbitration procedure continues. The panel of arbitrators is currently being constituted, and the parties are exchanging requests in writing. The hearing has not yet been set,” the CAS said in a statement.
The decision against Russia is upheld
Three days ago, the same court dismissed the request filed by the FUR to suspend, for the duration of the procedure, the execution of the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee to prevent all Russian teams and clubs from participating in its competitions until further notice.
Last 28 February, FIFA and UEFA jointly decided to suspend all Russian national teams and clubs from participating in the competitions of both until further notice, which implies the exclusion of Russia from the World Cup in Qatar 2022, for which it had to play the playoff .
The Russian team had yet to play the playoffs to opt for one of the three European places that still remain for the World Cup in Qatar 2022. Their first match was scheduled for 24 March, against Poland at home. In case of overcoming it, they had to face, again in their field, the winner of the duel between Sweden and the Czech Republic on 28 of March.
