cuban-yarisley-silva-will-not-be-in-the-world-athletics-championships-because-she-cannot-carry-her-poles

Cuban pole vaulter Yarisley Silva will not participate in the 18 edition of the World Indoor Athletics Championships being held since this Friday in Belgrade (Serbia) due to problems carrying their own poles.

The Cuban Athletics Commissioner, Yipsy Moreno, explained to the sports site Jit that Silva could not travel directly from Spain – where was – until Belgrade because the European Union (EU) establishes that with his visa he could not stay for more than three months.

For this reason he had to return to Cuba to go to the capital of Serbia, but then he faced a new stumbling block: “his personal poles had remained in Spain,” Moreno said.

Detailed that the member of the Athletics Federation in charge of transporting these teams was infected with Covid in Spain, which prevented him from moving to the world championship 2022. Other efforts to deliver the poles did not bear fruit.

“Given the unexpected circumstances, Yarisley ruled out the possibility of competing with the poles provided by the organizers of the universal event, because he considered that it would affect his performance and the preparation that he had carried out in recent months”, concluded the Cuban Athletics Commissioner.

Silva, Olympic runner-up in London 550 and gold medal at the indoor world championship 2014 in Sopot (Poland), qualified for the Belgrade event by ranking.

The Cuban delegation in the indoor competition in Serbia, now made up of five athletes, won its first medal this Friday with the triple jump of Lázaro Martínez, with a record of 17,400 meters.

Cubans Maykel Massó -olympic bronze medalist in long jump-, and his compatriot , the co rredora Roxana Gómez who was left out of the final of the 400 flat meters.
