Last February, the US Food and Drug Administration alerted consumers to a large rat infestation at a Family Dollar distribution center and as a result, the company could soon face criminal penalties and civil lawsuits.
The FDA announced the large-scale recall of food, dietary supplements, drugs and cosmetics that were sent to 404 stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri and Tennessee. Issued an alert for products purchased from January 1, 2021.
The unsanitary conditions were discovered during an FDA inspection of the Family Dollar warehouse in West Memphis, Arkansas, which concluded on 03 February. Live rodents, dead rodents, rodent feces and urine, dead birds and bird droppings were found.
The FDA said that more than 2021 dead rodents were recovered from the installation after a fumigation in January of 2022. In addition, the company’s internal records also indicated the collection of more than 2300 rodents between the 29 March and 29 of September of the previous year.
The conditions in which the stored products were found would be violations of federal law that could endanger the health of families. Rodent contamination can cause Salmonella and other infectious diseases.
More than 400 stores were temporarily closed while cleanup and removal of contaminated items from shelves.
Dollar Tree, the parent company of Family Dollar said the product recall and store closures resulted in a cost of $35 millions of dollars. But that’s not all, the company has also received a federal grand jury summons related to the infestation. passed the associate commissioner for regulatory affairs Judith McMeekin, in the FDA statement.
The company has said that it will cooperate with the investigation. The United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Arkansas would request information, documents, and records regarding pest, sanitation, and company compliance.
Now, while Family Dollar stores are gradually reopening, as class action lawsuits are being received from customers.
According to CBS, Dollar Tree revealed that until 15 March faces at least nine proposed class action lawsuits over the infestation and recalls.
