Bochum-Borussia Mönchengladbach was suspended this Friday after a beer glass was thrown that hit linesman Christian Gittelmann in the head.

In the absence of 19 minutes to go, and with the score 0-2 in favor of Borussia Mönchengladbach with goals from Alassane Plea and Breel Embolo, a glass thrown by a Bochum fan hit Gittelmann.

The referee, Benjamin Cortus, interrupted the match and left the pitch together with his assistants.

Then, Bochum, from its official Twitter account, lamented the action of one of its fans: “An idiot has thrown something onto the field. The linesman has been hit. The game stops. Enough nonsense, they have no place in a stadium! Incredibly stupid!”

Borussia Mönchengladbach also reacted to the attack suffered by the lineman via social media: “A Bochum fan has thrown a beer at the head of the assistant referee and the match has therefore been stopped. Unacceptable actions.”

Minutes later Cortus decided to call off the meeting for good. “The game will not restart. The match stopped. We ask you to leave the stadium in a peaceful and civilized way”, they announced from the Vonovia Ruhrstadion loudspeaker.
