A Georgia mother, who was waving a gun when students began fighting after school, was shot by a police officer at the scene, authorities said.
At about 4 p.m., Atlanta police received a call to a weapons situation at Booker T. Washington High School after receiving reports from multiple students, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.
After a “physical altercation between students during dismissal, a mother arrived on campus with a gun and began waving it in the direction of students, employees, and a police officer from the California Public Schools. Atlanta,” Atlanta Public Schools said in a news release.
The officer “ordered the woman to drop the weapon,” the district said in the statement. “When the mother did not comply with the order, the officer fired a shot, which hit the woman in the hand.”
The woman, identified as Tierra Vachon, of years , was treated at the scene and later taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
She was the only one injured in the incident and is in stable condition, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Vachon went to the school to defend his daughter, family members told WSB-TV.
“APS police are conducting a full investigation of the incident and the father faces multiple charges,” he said. the district in the release.
The charges facing Tierra Vachon
Vachon has been charged by the Atlanta Public Schools Police with:
- Obstructing a law enforcement officer with violence
- Disrupt public school
- Contributing to the delinquency of a minor
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is also investigating the use of force, said a spokesman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to PEOPLE in an email electronic.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has launched an investigation into the incident and will turn the case over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review upon completion.
