Semajs Short, aged 24 who was serving a long sentence for murdering Dy’Unanna Anderson, a 2-year-old minor in 2014, was murdered by other inmates, as was announced by high-ranking prison officials.
The North Carolina Department of Public Safety, NCDPS, stated that the victim was attacked by fellow inmates at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor on Tuesday afternoon.
The NCDPS spokesperson later reported that the North Carolina man was attacked in exactly one area of housing inside the prison.
“Prison first responders performed life-saving measures until local paramedics arrived and also worked to resuscitate the offender,” authorities reported.
Despite medical efforts, rescuers were unable to revive Short who was pronounced dead around 2: 37 in the afternoon.

About the attackers, in the press release it was reported that some of them were injured during the attack: “Three other criminals were injured during the group assault and they were transferred to an external medical center to receive treatment for injuries that are not life-threatening.”
It was also reported that no element working in the aforementioned prison was injured after the attack between prisoners.
So far it is unknown precisely how the attack arose, however, prison officials closed the facility so that investigators from the Windsor Police Department and the State Office find out how the attack happened.
Semajs Short was convicted of second degree murder in Halifax County on April 3, 2017 and was serving a sentence of 31 years. Records showed that Short had more than two dozen violations during his nearly five years behind bars. Many were violent in nature, including gun fights and gang involvement. He had also been in trouble for lock tampering.
