This Thursday, the United States Department of State announced that passport applications will have the gender option “X”, which will be able to mark transgender and non-binary people starting next 11 April.
Motivated by the commemoration of Transgender Awareness Day, the State Department reported on this measure with which it ensured that it will be a “significant step” in President Joe Biden’s commitment to guarantee equality.
“As of April, US citizens will be able to select an X as a gender marker on their US passport application, and the option will be available for other forms of documentation next year,” the statement details.
The United States Transportation Administration (TSA) also announced that through technological systems more advanced could be replaced the inspection of these pe based on gender in order to improve security and respect for trans people during their trips.
“In the coming months, the TSA will move quickly to implement more secure screening processes and efficient that are gender-neutral, as well as technology upgrades that will improve security and make TSA PreCheck enrollment more inclusive,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske.
The White House stated that it seeks to “advance the dignity, respect and self-determination of transgender people by improving their travel experience.”
