“he-could-have-killed-me-in-the-ring”:-floyd-mayweather-jr.-thanks-god-for-not-having-faced-the-mexican-antonio-margarito

Floyd Mayweather Jr. was once called a coward. The former American boxer finished his professional career undefeated, but at some point in his career, Antonio Margarito stated that the popular “Money” was afraid to face him. Ten years later, Floyd does not regret having rejected the Mexican and even thanks God for that.

The reason why “Money” is grateful for having rejected the Aztec is linked to his controversy on 2009. The California Athletic Commission suspended Antonio Margarito for a year for finding a stiff, plaster-like substance in his bandages prior to his fight against Shane Mosley. At that time, the Mexican provoked Mayweather in search of a fight.

“Antonio Margarito said over and over again that I was afraid of him. I was pushing and I wanted to fight so much because I was beating fighters with loaded gloves (with ‘cast’), so I’m glad God didn’t let that fight happen,” recalled Floyd Mayweather in an interview with Fight Hype.

Mayweather vs. Margarito: a fight that could have ended in tragedy

“Money” does not regret having turned his back on the Mexican boxer. Floyd Mayweather Jr. considers that Margarito could have illegally hurt him inside the ring and given the dangerous circumstances, he assures that he could have even killed him.

“You don’t know what kind of effect it would have had on me. Those (punches) would have wreaked havoc after my boxing career was over. He could have ended up killing me in the ring, you don’t know what could happen. So sometimes you have certain signals (not to face boxers). I was never afraid of him and at that particular moment there was no point in us fighting,” he concluded.
