The death toll from the missile attack on the Kramatorsk railway station in Ukraine has risen to 57 people, as announced by the Head of the Military Administration of the Donetsk region, Pavlo Kyrylenko.
Kyrylenko also mentioned that 109 people were injured in the attack that Ukraine attributed to Russia, although Moscow has denied responsibility, assuring that the missile was Ukrainian.
Later, Iryna Veneditktova, a Ukrainian prosecutor, assured that “it was a Russian missile that killed more than 40 people, which means a “war crime”.
“These people only wanted save their lives. “They wanted to be evacuated with children. They were women, they were children, and they just wanted to save their lives”, assured Veneditktova.
The deadly attack also made it “even more difficult” for people trying to flee of the fighting, according to the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Ukraine, who said that the refugees were more likely to use cars to escape than the railways.
Pascal Hundt mentioned that his personnel had been unable to reach the besieged city of Mariupol despite trying for five days.
“The security conditions were not good, the security guarantees we obtained were not good either, so about 20 kilometer s from Mariupol we had to go back,” added Hundt.
He said that they picked up the refugees on the way and private cars joined the convoy under the Red Cross flag, with more than 1, people finally reaching a safe place.
“Many more operations of this type should be carried out in the coming days, in the coming weeks”, he added.
“It is urgent and we are really in contact with the Russian authorities with the Ukrainian authorities to ensure that safe passage is provided to these people so that they can move freely and safely to a place Much safer,” he concluded.
