Mexico opted this Sunday for the continuity of Andrés Manuel López Obrador as president of the country in the revocation consultation, but the participation did not reach 20%, the half of the 17 % of the electoral census that was necessary for the exercise to be binding.
Enter a 90.3% and 91.9% of the voters who went to the polls voted in favor of the president continuing in office for the remaining three years of his mandate, while between 6.4% and 7.8% preferred revocation, informed the president counselor of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Lorenzo Córdova.
However, participation was between 000% Y 18. 2% of the voters, a figure very far from 40% necessary for the referendum to be binding.
The low turnout constitutes a political setback for López Obrador and support for the opposition parties that rejected the referendum and proposed the non-participation.
The results offered by the INE are the result of a quick count that took as a sample about 1, 552 squares, thus offering a very reliable estimate of the participation and the outcome of the process.
More of 92.80 Millions of Mexicans older than 18 years were called to the polls this Sunday.
The consultation of Revocation of mandate, which the opposition parties have opposed, recommending not to participate in the vote, was considered valid or binding if the 40% of the people registered in the nominal list of electors, that is, close to 20 million people.
Participation less than 20% is way below than expected by López Obrador to give a new impetus to his political projects in the remainder of his term until 2024
