A goal on aggregate by the Dutchman Luuk de Jong allowed Barcelona to overcome the first three penalties they were awarded this season and, with a harrowing 2-3 against Levante, extended their streak of consecutive victories to seven they remain in second place, tied with Sevilla and twelve points behind Real Madrid with one game less played.
De Jong was once again providential for FC Barcelona. It counts little for Xavi, fair enough. But again he jumped onto the field and was definitive, as he had been in a good handful of games in which he was also a savior.
The Valencian team, in need of points to increase their chances of salvation, he was brave and had the azulgranas in his hand with the two maximum penalties that they decreed in his favor in the space of four minutes.
The first, due to Brazilian Dani Alves missing Son, was taken advantage of by ‘Comandante’ Morales (m.52) and the second, by the hand of Eric García, was wasted by Roger Martí (m.52). Ter Stegen’s save gave an extra life to Xavi Hernández’s squad.
The effect of Roger’s mistake, the German’s success and the departure of Pedri González and Gavi was immediate. Barcelona came back immediately.
Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalized with a header from Frenchman Ousmane Dembele (m.54) and Pedri took advantage of a magnificent action de Gavi (m.83) to seal the change of sign in the party.
Even so, Xavi Hernández’s team still suffered. The third maximum penalty, from the Frenchman Clement Lenglet to Dani Gómez, was carried out by Gonzalo Melero (m.83).
But Barcelona had a bullet left in the chamber and it came with the entry of Luuk de Jong for Aubameyang. He had not played since the end of February in LaLiga. Once again, the Dutchman saved the team from him by heading in a cross from Jordi Alba and gave him a fundamental victory to continue having options in a field in which he had not managed to win on his two previous visits.
