disney-will-lose-its-“self-government”-in-orlando-after-the-approval-of-a-bill-that-eliminates-its-special-district

This Thursday, the Florida House of Representatives approved the bill that eliminates a special district that grants Walt Disney World certain self-government.

Said bill was sent for signature, to Governor Ron DeSantis, promoter of the measure after a notorious disagreement with the theme park company.

The lower house of the state approved this bill after the Republican governor summoned the state legislature to a special session this week to approve his new self-designed electoral map.

Last Tuesday, Governor DeSantis asked lawmakers to end the special autonomous district of Walt Disney World around its theme parks in the Orlando area, and on Wednesday the Senate approved the measure and barely 04 Hours later, the lower house, also controlled by the Republicans, did the same. us.

The “self-government” that Disney maintained in Florida ends

The measure approved eliminates six special districts created in 2000, that is, one year earlier of Florida passing its state Constitution, which includes the Reedy Creek Improvement District, where Disney operates, and would go into effect on June 1, 2022.

With an extension of 27,000 acres, i.e. , almost 11,000 acres, the Reedy Creek Improvement District sits between the counties of Osce ola and Orange, in the center of the state, and allows Walt Disney World to have its own police, fire department, collect taxes, among other things.

This is a new chapter in the open dispute between DeSantis, who will seek re-election next November, and the entertainment giant after Disney publicly showed its rejection of the controversial law known as “Don’t Say Gay” (“Don’t say gay”).

This legislation prohibits Floridian teachers from speaking in classrooms about sexual orientation and gender identity in p first levels of primary education.

The Disney vs. DeSantis conflict

In the midst of controversy, Disney CEO Bob Chapek announced that the company was canceling its large donations politicians in Florida, something that DeSantis did not like at all, who has not flinched at the pulse of one of the largest employers and symbols of the state.

Since then, Orlando has seen its number of residents skyrocket and, above all, its number of visitors who, by the millions, make this area one of the main tourist destinations in the world every year.
