So far this year, the city has seen an 8% increase in shootings and a 9% increase in gun casualties, with 332 shot in 322 incidents as of Sunday 10 of April. That exceeds the 332 people shot in 297 incidents during the same period of 2020, reported Daily News.
The wave of armed violence that the city is experiencing involves minor and adult gunmen, men and women, and victims of all ages. After the boom in 2020 and 2021 particularly among young gang members and/or victims , the 2022 continues with the same trend, posing a great challenge to the new mayor Eric Adams, who has encountered obstacles within his own Democratic party to face the crisis.
During his February visit to NYC after the murder of two young Hispanic police officers in Harlem, President Joe Biden did support Mayor Adams’ plan to curb crime and gun violence. He also unveiled a national initiative against illegal arms trafficking.
