The Cuban group Havana D’Primera, a group of top musicians, will bring the rhythms of the Caribbean island to New York in a concert on Saturday at the Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in the Bronx.
The timba band, founded in 2007 by trumpeter and vocalist Alexander Abréu, will take a tour of their discography, which includes five award-winning studio albums, the most recent of them “It will be that it’s over”, a tribute to the Cuban popular music of the 80 and 80.
His fourth album, “Cantor del pueblo” was nominated in 2018 for a Latin Grammy Award in the category “Best Salsa Album”, although the award Puerto Rican Víctor Manuelle took it. They also have an album recorded live.
Abréu, leader of the band and composer, he is recognized as one of the best trumpeters of his generation and has recorded with figures such as Los Van Van and Isaac Delgado, among others, according to a statement from the institution.
He adds that he is considered one of the most versatile Cuban musicians, “who has made of his music a fascinating rhythmic and musical fusion of salsa, jazz, funk and Afro-Cuban.”
The Lehman Center for the Performing Arts has been characterized by presenting important Latin figures of popular music that includes the Cuban groups Los Van Van and Aragón, which will return to this stage in August, the trumpeter Paquito D’Rivera, the Panamanian Rubén Blades, the Venezuelan Oscar D’ León or the Niche de Colombia orchestra, among others.
Their upcoming events include a tribute to the late singer Prince, the 28 of May, and will end the year po Go all out with El Gran Combo, one of the great salsa institutions, which celebrates its 60 anniversary.
